Gujjar impasse comes to an end

The impasse over the Government of Rajasthan and the Gujjar community over the Gujjar ST reservation imbroglio has died down since the concerned state government finally conceded their demands. What is more the Gujjar leader Col. Kirori Singh Bainsala accepted its offer to classify Gujjars as a ‘separate backward community’ with five percent quota along with Banjara and Rewari communities in Rajasthan. This stance finally pacified the agitating leadership over the Gujjar community and they decided to scratch the 27-day-old violent agitation, that rocked the state for the first time in its history.

However, till now the state government has not done anything fruitful like sending a formal recommendation to the Centre for inclusion of Gujjars under the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category in the state. But without any doubt the government’s changed attitude, which was resolute till the other day, proved to be enough to delight the vitriolic leaders of the community.

Col. Bainsala was hopeful that there would be no such delay on the part of the Centre acting upon their demand for ST status. He was also aspirant that this motility would also please his community members and the violent agitation would end with his reaching Pilukapura.

This mood was noticed when the Gujjar delegates and state government emissaries jointly held a press conference at the office of the Chief Minister. The reservation, once enacted will be applicable in state level services, education sector, Panchayat and urban level government bodies. Furthermore the government has agreed to compensate the loss of the participants in the agitation for instance the slain members along with the persons with serious and minor injuries.
